My Therapeutic Approach:

Having worked in mental health for a number of years, I am very aware of the importance of developing an individualised therapy tailored to meet your specific needs.  Consequently, I often draw upon a range of therapeutic models and interventions to create a personalised therapy for you.

I am a qualified Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) Practitioner, certified Sensorimotor Psychotherapist, certified Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST) Therapist and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Practitioner.

I also use elements of  Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) in my work.

I offer face to face therapy in Sheffield. I can offer short, medium or longer-term therapy, dependent on your needs and goals.

I do not currently offer therapy online.

I accept referrals from individuals, health professionals and organisations.

Therapy Models

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)

CAT is a collaborative, relational therapy that supports people to explore how they have internalised early experiences and significant relationships, and how these internalised aspects shape their interactions in their relationships with themselves and others in the present day.

CAT involves the identification of key patterns (of thoughts, feelings and behaviours), that might be maintaining or reinforcing a given difficulty that an individual brings to therapy.  Alternative patterns or coping strategies (‘exits’) can then be developed and practiced with the support of the therapist.

CAT is a time-limited therapy and usually takes place over 16 or 24 sessions.   It emphasises the importance of the meaning-making relationship between client and therapist as a means to change.

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR helps individuals to recover from distressing or traumatic events and the symptoms these experiences may have caused, such as flashbacks, upsetting images and thoughts, anxiety or depression.

EMDR has a sound and growing evidence base for a range of difficulties and is recommended by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP)

SP is an experiential, body-centred approach that helps people to recover from symptoms (e.g. anxiety, dissociation, emotional dysregulation), that may arise out of distressing or traumatic experiences. This includes trauma arising out of early developmental experiences.

The SP approach is based on research relating to how the nervous system responds to trauma.  SP supports individuals to sufficiently resource themselves, to be able to then mindfully tune into their body’s experience.  It aids in the recognition of habitual, sometimes limiting or stuck patterns of being in our bodies and the world.

SP enables the processing of traumatic  ‘symptoms’, alongside consideration of ‘missing’ developmental experiences.   SP believes in the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

Trauma-Informed Stabilisation Treatment (TIST)

TIST is a trauma-informed approach that integrates aspects of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP).

TIST  focuses on treating the  ‘symptoms’ (e.g. thoughts, feelings, behaviours) of traumatic developmental experiences, supporting individuals to reduce trauma-driven impulses to self-harm, or engage in unsafe or addictive behaviours.

TIST primarily takes a ‘parts’ oriented approach to working with the ‘symptoms’ of developmental trauma. ‘Symptoms’ are seen to be a manifestation or communication from ‘parts’ of the self and clients are encouraged to  bring curiosity and acceptance to each part as a means to healing.
